What is DISCIPLE?

Disciple is an approach to Bible study that emphasizes disciplined reading of Scripture. In weekly meetings, watch a video presentation by a biblical scholar on the subject. Then, join in study and discussion of the scripture of the week. Each participant makes a commitment to daily preparation, weekly attendance, and full participation in the group study sessions. DISCIPLE calls on persons to submit themselves to examination by Scripture, to put themselves under the power of God’s word, and to be changed by God’s word.  It results in biblically nourished persons committed to live as disciples. Disciple aims at transformation, not just information. Participants often become good friends.

Available Courses:

1. Disciple I
"Becoming Disciples Through Bible Study" - If you are new to the DISCIPLE program, then it is best to begin here with a thirty-four week overview of the Bible, learning anew to interpret and apply Scripture to daily life. This first study in the DISCIPLE program is a thirty-four week journey through the Biblical story from Genesis to Revelation. The first half of the course is devoted to the Old Testament and the second seventeen weeks covers the New Testament. Although Bible study meetings are held once per week, participants can expect daily reading assignments to require 30 to 45 minutes six days per week.

2. Invitation To The Old Testament
This eight-week study approaches the study of Hebrew Scriptures by inviting participants to hear the story of God and God's calling of the people of Israel through the many "voices" of the biblical text. Narrative, poem, history and prophetic utterance all have their own distinctive characteristics and purpose, arising out of a particular historical, social, and cultural setting. Video presentations of recent archeological findings and their significance in our understanding of the Hebrew people and scriptures are especially interesting. Through this study, participants will be invited to listen afresh to the witness of the Old Testament to hear God's call and purpose for their own lives and respond to that call.
